Original Hablot Knight Browne Illustrations for Sale
Illustrations for sale by direct descendant of Hablot Knight Browne
Known as "Phiz", the illustrator Hablot Knight Browne worked with Charles Dickens (“Boz”) for over two decades, beginning in 1836 when Browne started illustrating Dickens's serialized novel Pickwick Papers.
As proud descendants of Phiz, my family is in possession of a number of his drawings, some of which we are now willing to offer for sale.
There are several delightful preliminary sketches of a hunting scene (coloured chalk on dark green card, small, lightly stained, perhaps painter’s turps spilled in the studio) and one finished piece illustrating Shakespeare's Midsummer Night’s Dream (ink on beige card, A4 sized).
These works reflect the light touch, meticulous draughtsmanship and keen understanding of storytelling that played such a critical role in shaping the imagery associated with Dickens's characters and stories.
This is a unique opportunity to own part of Dickens's history.
Sketches: $180 AUD each
Finished art work: $840 AUD each.
